Press Release: Tyler Magnus Cowboy Hall of Fame 2009 Inductee

Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Announces Inductees for 2009

FORT WORTH, TX – Six new honorees will join the ranks of the distinguished Inductees at Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. They are: Jim Bob Altizer, Tommy Lee Jones, Tyler Magnus, Rope Myers, Ken Welch and Barry Corbin — Rick Smith Spirit of Texas Recipient. Inclusion into Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed on individuals who have shown excellence in competition, business, and support of rodeo and the western lifestyle in Texas.

The Induction Ceremony is one of the premier events prior to the Fort Worth Stock Show, and will be held at the Museum, Thursday, January 15, 2009. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with the silent auction; Dinner at 6:30 p.m. The Induction Ceremony follows immediately at 7:00 p.m. Individual tickets are $100 or table for 10 for $1000.

The 2009 Inductees are:

Jim Bob Altizer – (1932-1997). His skills and his achievements were phenomenal, but it was his loyalty and dedication he gave to Rodeo that made him a winner! His accolades include 1959 RCA Calf Roping Champion, 1979 Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer and 1995 National Cowboy Hall of Famer. He competed in the National Finals calf roping 10 times and in the NFR steer roping six times.

Tommy Lee Jones – A successful actor, author, and producer, this 8th generation Texan owns 3,000-acre ranch where he raises cattle and polo ponies. Not only is Mr. Jones an Emmy, Golden Globe and Academy Award Winner, this 2-goal rated champion’s Polo team won the U.S. Polo Association’s Western Challenge Cup in 1993. He built a polo field in a pasture at his ranch and each year he invites Harvard’s best polo players down to practice.

Tyler Magnus – Cowboying since an early age qualified for his first NFR in 1988 and also won the Texas Circuit that year. Magnus has qualified for the NFR nine times and is the 1995 NFR Average Winner. Tyler is uniquely qualified to both head and heel in roping events. He is well respected in the equine industry as one of the top horsemen and instructors in the country. Today, he produces and stars in The Roping Show, which airs on RFD-TV.

Rope Myers – Born into a rodeo family. He is the 2001 World Champion Steer Wrestler, smashing the NFR record, throwing 10 steers in 37.4 seconds – a record that still stands! He won a Gold Medalist at the 2002 Olympic Command Performance Rodeo in Salt Lake City. Today, he teaches young children about rodeo and the western lifestyle through his ministry and talents at a Christian youth camp and retreat center in Van, Texas.

Ken Welch – Son of legendary horseman Buster Welch, Ken started his college career at Texas Tech, where he got on his first Saddle Bronc in 1969. He qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in 1972. At the final round of the 1973 Cheyenne Frontier Days he received a career ending neck injury. He focused his talents on ranching, working at the King Ranch. In 1979, Helen Groves of Silverbrook Ranch asked for his advice about her Silverbrook Ranch, where 26 years later he the current Ranch Manager. (Buster, Sheila, Greg, and Ken Welch are the largest family honored in Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Step 3 - Tip

The last article contained suggestions on how to formulate your swing. This article will cover your rope tip.

The six steps are:

1) Position

2) Swing

3) Tip

4) Target

5) Delivery

6) Dally

This month we will continue with step #3…the tip. The tip of your rope is undoubtedly the most important part of your rope. It doesn’t matter if you are a calf roper, header or heeler…the better you can control your tip the better roper you will become. Having control of your tip will generate more accuracy, control and power with your loop, swing and delivery. Accuracy, control and power create consistency which will lead to more success with your roping.

To find the tip of your rope, take your loop and split it in half. The point or tip created by splitting your rope is your tip. The tip of your rope is the part you most want to control because it gives you power, accuracy and consistency with your rope. Creating control of your tip is accomplished by learning the proper grip of your rope and mastering the proper hand motion during your swing. The top part of your loop and tip of your rope is controlled by your forefinger and thumb. The bottom part of your loop is controlled by your little finger and the heel of your hand. With each swing of your loop, as your loop turns over you will roll your thumb down and the heel of your hand up. In this position your tip will be in a direct line to your target.

The first move with your rope should be back, not towards the steer or target. This will allow you to establish the tip in your swing. To create your tip you must keep your rope at your finger tips not in the palm of your hand. By pushing down with your forefinger and rolling your thumb down, turn the heel of your hand up towards the sky, you will create a window so you can look through your loop. The tip of your rope will be off your right shoulder at 3 o’clock.

You should establish a feel for your tip with every swing of your loop. Practice creating a delivery in every swing you take. There is no benefit to swinging your rope other than in the correct position when practicing on the dummy or on your approach to the steer if it’s not something you can use for power in your delivery. With every swing you should aim your tip right at your target; whether it is at the base of the left horn for headers or at the right hock for heelers.

When you can create and find the tip of your loop in every swing from the start you will be able to gain the tip control you need for a powerful, accurate swing and delivery.

Step 2 - Swing

A couple of months ago I introduced my philosophy on team roping by focusing on the six steps that I believe are the key elements to becoming a successful roper.

There are six major steps to be successful in the sport of team roping. These steps are the same whether you are a header or heeler, amateur or professional, young or old, you want to be competitive or just have fun. To achieve success at any level you need to fully understand and be in command of these steps.

The six steps are:

1) Position

2) Swing

3) Tip

4) Target

5) Delivery

6) Dally

This month we will continue with step #2… the swing. To establish your swing you need balance and confidence in the saddle. This must be established before you start to swing.

The first move with your rope should be back, not towards the steer. This will allow you to establish the tip in your swing. To create your tip you must keep your rope at your finger tips not in the palm of your hand. By pushing down with your forefinger and rolling your thumb down, turn the heel of your hand up towards the sky, you will create a window so you can look through your loop. The tip of your rope will be off your right shoulder at 3 p.m.

The eye of your rope must be less than half your loop, with no more than an arms length of rope between your coils and loop, with your coils at your shirt button or saddle horn. A balanced loop determines the accuracy of your swing.

When approaching your target always keep your right shoulder behind the left. Never approach your target with your shoulders square. This will give you a consistent fluid swing. When you can create and find the tip of our rope in every swing from the start you will be able to gain the tip control you need for a powerful accurate swing and delivery.

Step 1 - Position

Last month I introduced my philosophy on team roping by focusing on the six steps that I believe are the key elements to becoming a successful roper.

The six steps are:

1) Position

2) Swing

3) Tip

4) Target

5) Delivery

6) Dally

This month we will start off with position. Position actually starts when you enter and leave the box. The momentum you achieve throughout the run starts with the 1^st step of position.

Position is established by the balance and confidence you have in the saddle; your horses stride and the control you have of your horses stride. Small things like bridle adjustment, rein length, tie down adjustment, all help you control your horses stride.

There are several things that help us create a positive stride in our horse. Box preparation is important. Keep your box level with sound footing. This is a common problem I see. The box often gets holes in the back and front where the horse pushes off with their back and front feet. Always take a look at the box where you rope. Is it level? Can you stay in contact and remain balanced to ride your horse out of the box to setup the rest of the run?

Other important things that help develop your horses stride is their teeth. Having your horse’s teeth floated by an equine dentist is very important. I’ve seen many positive changes in my horses by consistently caring for their teeth. Having your horse properly shod is important too. Having a toe too long or short can have a dramatic affect on their stride as well as possibly causing other problems.

Our body posture in the saddle and stirrup length determines how much contact we keep with our horse in the box and as we are leaving the box. The more contact we have with our horse gives us stability in the saddle to create position.

We must gain stability, balance and confidence in the saddle before we can achieve position. All of these set up the 2nd step…the swing. We will cover the swing in depth next month.

Remember… the key to successfully achieving all steps is horsemanship, control, change, goals, work ethic and practice. Each step builds on the next, which ultimately results in a successful run. If you are lacking in control and horsemanship it will be difficult to achieve the correct position which is a critical step in setting up the rest of your run.

Another important part of successfully achieving these steps is change. The smallest amount of change can result in the biggest amount of progress.

This leads into practice. Have a goal and plan for each practice session. Identify your problem area and work on that. It’s important to always include your horse in your practice goals. Remember our horse is key to accomplishing these six steps and without your horse you cannot achieve them. So when practicing, always start with establishing the goals you are trying to achieve for both you and your horse. Always keep in mind his needs from the beginning and end of your practice sessions.
